Piazzale Michelangelo at a glance

Piazzale Michelangelo is a large terrace on the hill south of the Arno. From here you look over the whole city: the dome of the Duomo, the tower of Palazzo Vecchio, Santa Croce, the river and the Ponte Vecchio. It is the most popular place to see Florence from above, and it is free.

The architect Giuseppe Poggi designed the square, and the work was finished in 1875. A bronze copy of Michelangelo's David stands in the middle. It is a copy, not the original.

What you see from the terrace

Four landmarks to look for.

The Duomo and the old town

The dome of the cathedral is the first thing you notice. Next to it you can pick out the tower of Palazzo Vecchio and the church of Santa Croce.

The Arno and the Ponte Vecchio

The river bends through the city, and the Ponte Vecchio is part of the view. It is a small shape from this distance. Bring a lens or use the zoom on your phone if you want the shops in the picture.

History of the bridge →

The square itself

The terrace has stairs, grottoes and fountains, and the David copy stands in the middle. The square is a public place with no ticket and no entrance gate.

How to get to Piazzale Michelangelo

Two simple ways, and one more if you want a shorter climb.

On foot

The walk starts at the Arno. From the area around Piazza Giuseppe Poggi and the Porta San Niccolò, the Rampe del Poggi climb the hill. You pass stairs, grottoes and fountains on the way. The route is uphill and includes stairs, so plan extra time if stairs are hard for you.

By bus

City buses 12 and 13 stop at the square. A single ticket costs €2.00 since 1 August 2026, is valid for 90 minutes on buses and trams, and children under 11 travel free. Validate a paper ticket as soon as you board, and activate a digital ticket before you travel. Check the current timetable and your boarding stop before you go.

Combining the climb with your day

The square sits above the Oltrarno, so it pairs well with a morning at Palazzo Pitti or Santo Spirito. Walk up in the afternoon, wait for the evening light, and come down by bus or on the ramps. Check the weather first, since wind and rain make the terrace less pleasant.

The way back

You can walk down the same ramps to the river, or take the bus. Allow some extra time after sunset, when many visitors leave at once.

Sunset at Piazzale Michelangelo

The terrace is the standard place to watch the sun go down over Florence, and it is crowded around that time. Arrive well before the sun sets to find a spot at the wall. A free, quiet corner is not guaranteed on any evening.

The sunset time shifts through the year. Look up the time for your date, and keep in mind that buildings and hills can hide the sun a little before the listed time. In late October the clocks change, which moves the sunset by an hour on the clock. The sky has to cooperate too, and a clear view is never guaranteed.

For another angle on the bridge at the same hour, look at the Ponte alle Grazie. San Miniato al Monte lies higher up the hill, close to the square, and offers a second viewpoint.
