Where to stay in Florence near the Ponte Vecchio
Florence is compact, so most central areas are within walking distance of the bridge. The better question is which end of the walk you want to start from. The south bank, the Oltrarno, puts you near Palazzo Pitti, the Boboli Garden and Piazza Santo Spirito. The area around Santa Maria Novella station suits a short transfer on arrival. The stretch between the Duomo and Piazza della Signoria lies on the classic route from the station to the bridge.
This independent guide compares these areas and explains the tourist tax that every hotel adds to the bill. It has no room prices, because rates depend on the date, and no booking links. Check the rate and availability for your dates with the accommodation.

The areas compared
What each one is good for.
| Area | Good for | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Oltrarno (Pitti, Santo Spirito) | Workshops, studios, restaurants and meeting places; the walk over the bridge to Palazzo Pitti and Piazza Santo Spirito | Location of the room and your route to the station with luggage |
| Around Santa Maria Novella station | Arrival and departure by train | The walking route into the centre passes the Duomo and Piazza della Signoria |
| Duomo to Piazza della Signoria | Sights on foot: the cathedral, the Uffizi and the bridge are on one route | Whether the street is in the restricted traffic zone if you arrive by car |
| By the bridge on the Arno | River views and the shortest walk to the Ponte Vecchio | Whether a room has a river view; a bridge view is never guaranteed |
These are neighbourhood descriptions and not a ranking. Noise, safety, price level and room quality vary from one property to the next, whatever the neighbourhood. Read the details of each listing.
Oltrarno, the south bank
Across the bridge.
The Oltrarno begins on the south side of the Ponte Vecchio. The classic city walk crosses the bridge, passes Palazzo Pitti and ends at Piazza Santo Spirito. Along this route you find workshops, artists' studios, restaurants and meeting places. The area does not become cheap or quiet because of that, so judge each hotel individually.
The Boboli Garden lies behind the Palazzo Pitti, and the hill with Piazzale Michelangelo is on the same bank. See our Oltrarno guide for the neighbourhood and the Pitti Palace guide for the museums and the garden.
One named property sits right at the bridge: Hotel Lungarno, at Borgo San Jacopo 14, on the Arno next to the Ponte Vecchio. The hotel lists several room categories with river views and accepts pets. Not every room looks onto the bridge, so ask what your category offers.

The station area and the centre
Arrival by train and the route on foot.
Santa Maria Novella station is in the city centre. From there the route runs to the Duomo, down Via dei Calzaiuoli to Piazza della Signoria and the Uffizi, and on to the Ponte Vecchio. A hotel near the station is practical when you arrive late or leave early by train. A hotel between the Duomo and Piazza della Signoria puts the sights on your doorstep. You can cover the bridge, the cathedral and the Uffizi on foot from either. Our getting there guide explains the tram from the airport, and the Duomo guide covers the cathedral.

If you come by car
A booking does not open the traffic zone.
A hotel room does not allow you to drive freely into the old town. Contact the reception or the garage before you arrive. They may have to report your number plate and can give you the permitted route. Large parts of the old town are a restricted traffic zone with camera control. The details of the ZTL times and the park and ride at Villa Costanza are in our getting there guide. Weather and crowds can also affect your choice of dates, see the best time to visit guide.
